the Musical history of jouni lehtonen
I am a self-educated Finnish composer, musician, producer and recording technician. I started making music as a teenager studying
guitar, bass, piano and the drums. I also played drums in a couple of bands during the 70's. However, I soon realized that
my greatest ambition was not to play in bands, but to compose and, most importantly, to realize those compositions as recordings.
Hours of my one-man-band were recorded using Tandberg, Revox A77 and Teac A3440 reel to reel taperecorders (later FostexA8 and
Tascam32) and partly self-made recording gear. When the midi technique emerged (and much later digital audio workstations) I was
finally able to produce music up to professional standards. At the end of 1980's I got my first paying gigs composing music for TV
commercials and business videos with these new tools. In 1992 I was the co-producer and arranger of Joel Hallikainen's first album which
reached triple-platinum sales and is still in the fifth position of the most sold Finnish records. Since then I have contributed to making
of about 20 albums in the finnish pop/rock scene, playing, producing, arranging, recording and mixing as well as writing an occasional
lyric. Since 1994 I have been involved in over 100 theatre productions for pro and amateur theatre. For the majority of these I have
composed music and/or designed sound effects, for some pre-recorded and mixed the music, or simply helped with the sound system.
I have composed original music for a few educational/dramatized documentary programs for the national broadcasting company
YLE. The latest series ”Pienten historia” (History of the little ones) received about 1,8 million viewers including reruns. I've also scored a few
short films. The latest of these, ”The Monk and the Thief”, can be downloaded here. A new two minute composition for
Zennor Alexander's animation can be found here.
For the more technically oriented people here is the list of the software/hardware I use. The page is partly in Finnish.
A two and a half minute mp3 ”demoreel” (3,4Mb) of my music can be found here. A new longer eight minute mp3 demo (11,8Mb) can be found here. Full versions of these pieces have been used in TV programs, short films or theatre performances.
